Air passenger forecasts for NZ Customs

The development of a 10 year passenger forecast for Auckland International Airport to help determine NZ Customs’ future infrastructure and human resource needs.

Analysis of measures to improve oil security

A series of studies to assist in the development of oil security policy: (1) a cost benefit analysis of increasing levels of oil storage consistent with IEA requirements, (2) analysis of options for rapid demand restraint in the event of a supply emergency and (3) the design of a fuel rationing system.

Analysis of the cruise ship industry

Covec has provided advice to several public sector agencies on the costs and benefits of developing a new cruise ship terminal in Auckland.  During the course of these projects we have examined the economic benefits of the cruise ship industry, analysed detailed ship and passenger movement data and assessed a range of design and location options for a dedicated cruise ship terminal in Auckland.

Merger analysis in the waste industry

Chapman Tripp

Detailed empirical modelling of the cost and demand for different forms of waste collection in cities of varying sizes, including modelling economies of route density.

Passenger forecasts for Cairns & Mackay airports

Covec was commissioned by a consortium of investment banks to generate annual passenger forecasts to 2030 to support the purchases of Cairns & Mackay Airports in Northern Queensland.  The forecasts were the main drivers of the valuation models used by the banks.  Our consortium was successful in purchasing the two airports.

The impact of the price of oil on inbound tourism

This was a three-year research project delivered in partnership with Lincoln University and Landcare Research.  The main objective of the project was to assess the sensitivity of the inbound tourism market to the price of oil.  The outputs from the project included several published articles and a range of working papers.
