Recent Work

Design & implementation of the tourism flows model

Ministry of Tourism (NZ)

Covec developed the Tourism Flows Model for the Ministry of Tourism.  The model allows users to view the spatial flows of domestic and international tourists through a custom-built GIS software application, and can now be used online at http://tourism.maphost.co.nz/.

Design & management of the tourism industry monitor

Ministry of Tourism (NZ)

The Tourism Industry Monitor (TIM) is an ongoing research programme developed specifically for the tourism industry by Covec.  The TIM is informed by a monthly online survey of tourism businesses and is designed to monitor the performance, confidence and outlook for tourism businesses in New Zealand.  Covec designed and implemented the online survey and manages the entire research process.

Economic impact of Ironman New Zealand 2009

Ironman New Zealand Limited

The purpose of this project was to assess the economic impact of Ironman New Zealand on the Taupo and New Zealand economies.  Our analysis was informed by the results of two online surveys designed and implemented by Covec – one for competitors and one for spectators.  Covec undertook all aspects of this project including the field research, online surveying, economic analysis and presentation of results.

Management of the international visitor survey

Ministry of Tourism (NZ)

The International Visitor Survey is an ongoing research programme that collects detailed information from 5,200 international visitors to New Zealand each year.  The research is funded by the Ministry of Tourism, and the programme is classified as Tier 1 (the highest level of importance) by Statistics New Zealand.  Covec has managed the International Visitor Survey since July 2008, and has made significant improvements to the productivity and accuracy of the programme in that time.

Redesign & management of the NZHC research programme

New Zealand Hotel Council

We have made several major enhancements to the NZHC programme since taking it over in 2004.  These include the collection of monthly data through a simple, secure website and the development of a tiered communications programme that meets the needs of a range of users.  The NZHC research programme is now considered to be a benchmark within the tourism industry and has recently been recognised by Statistics New Zealand as a collection mechanism for the Commercial Accommodation Monitor (CAM).
